On the right is an old anode rod from a water heater, the left is the new replacement.
An anode rod is a sacrificial rod that goes inside your water heater tank. It exists to protect the metal lining inside of your tank from corroding thus extending the life of the heater.
Manufactures recommend inspecting these every 1-3 years and replacing them when more than 50% has been consumed.
